Guided
reading for children struggling to acquire the basic skills 'A
boy with severe reading difficulties has read Books 1 - 5. I asked him if he
liked them. "Yes," he said," Mum thinks they're great. They're
the first books I've read all by myself." His grin went from ear to ear.' 'With one
little girl it's a real breakthrough. She's 8 and has Moderate Learning
Difficulties. She loves stories but found attending to text very difficult - but
the large clear text and the colouring in have been great for her.' This guided reading series helps children - especially those with special educational needs - to develop a competent sight vocabulary of 35 high-frequency words in an enjoyable way. 31 of them are listed in the National Literacy Strategy Word List for Reception Year. The recording media give detailed information on reading skills and are simple to complete. The books (10 pages each) introduce and repeat the 35 target words in sentences which gradually become more complex through the series. The print size also gradually reduces and the format of the layout becomes more challenging. You’ll also notice other progressions through the series, all helping children develop reading fluency so that they become competent independent readers. Since they are copiable, books can be put together in school in A5 or A4 format. There is tremendous potential for use in a home-school reading programme - children take the books home to colour in and read with a parent, for example. No more worries about books going home and never coming back - you simply reprint. The potential for the 'homeschool curriculum' is also high. This guided reading series breaks new ground in educational resources. Any primary school would derive great benefits from All by Myself. Many children already have. PAPER EDITION
