DOLCH LIST AND OTHER VOCABULARY LISTS The Dolch word list is rather like the old teapot you can't bear to throw out - chipped and leaking, but it still makes a grand cuppa! Those teaching children to read and spell will tell you it remains a useful vocabulary list, largely correct but for some shuffled words and the decline of the word 'pretty'. Maybe 'cool' should replace it? Vocabulary tests and spelling tests rely on such lists to assess a child's literacy skills. Education UK (the DfEE) in the National Literacy Strategy prescribe which words should be recognised by children in reading materials and also by what stage in their education. A phonic progression is also offered. Special needs resources from senter are well attuned to high frequency words. Five titles in particular deal with sight word lists and spelling core vocabulary words. The titles are also links to articles about the publications: Free downloads are provided which feature Dolch Sight Word List and other vocabulary lists (MS Word 6.0 format) Dolch
Sight Word List etc. (Acrobat(r) Reader .pdf) and vocabulary lists from all the above publications. I hope you find them useful. If you have any other vocabulary lists you think might be useful to fellow teachers, would you please contact senter by e-mail to mailto: vocabulary.lists at senter.co.uk If possible, I'll publish them freely on this site.
