Adapting Curriculum for Special Needs Children
A brief overview of senter publications

Whether dyslexia or any other specific learning difficulty is the problem, adapting the curriculum for special needs children is the challenge.  Much can be done by subject teachers in collaboration with the Special Needs Coordinator (SENCo) to maximise adapting curriculum across the board. Curriculum coordinators in larger schools will also be valuable allies

But specific measures on adapting literacy levels in curriculum materials will provide a significant contribution to success.

Dyslexia resources, for example, are a strong feature of senter's range and many titles apart from those specifically targeted at dyslexic children will contribute to success in adapting curriculum, or at least improving literacy skills in particular children to ease their access to curriculum.

The phonic worksheets in A Phonic Spelling Programme and Word Attack Strategies offer a range of approaches, giving repetition with variety.  Specific dyslexia resources include Mnemonic Spelling System, Maths Screen and Joint Exercises.

For language difficulties, The Language GAP provides both diagnosis and remediation.  Rat Rhymes offers suggested directed activities covering phonics and phonological awareness around six short, accessible, poems.

The Maths range offers some 'stretch' for higher abilities.

All by Myself readers is for children struggling to acquire basic reading skills and promotes independent reading for younger children.  A Working Vocabulary will help younger children acquire a sound 80-word common core sight vocabulary through its huge variety of materials.

All in all, you'd be hard put to find a range so well focused for adapting curriculum for special needs children as senter's.

Visit senter's home page for news of the latest developments.
